Top tips for a safe and happy Halloween
Halloween is a fantastic time for kids to dress up and have fun trick or treating. But it’s also a night when roads can be busier and more unpredictable. So, stay alert when gathering goodies, especially in the witching hours 5pm to 7pm. To make sure the only scares are from your kids’ costumes, we’ve got some tips on how you and your family can stay safe during spooky season!
For the mummies, devilish dads and ghoulish grandparents
-
Make costumes bright and safe
Go for colourful costumes and add reflective tape or glow sticks. Bright costumes are more visible to drivers.
-
Put your phone away
Take the cute snaps before you go out. When trick or treating, stay focused on your surroundings and keep your eyes on the road and your kids.
-
Bring a torch
Light the way with a small torch or glow stick. It’ll help your child see and make them easier to spot.
-
Masks up, look left, look right
Lift up your kids’ fancy dress masks or helmets before crossing the road. It’ll give them a clear view to help them see cars and judge when it’s safe to cross.
-
Use pedestrian crossings
Always cross at designated crossings, look both ways and hold your little one’s hand, if needed.
Before you hit the road, Jack (-o’-lantern) – remember safe driving!
-
Slow down in residential areas
Don’t be driving like a bat out of hell! Trick or treaters may be out and about, so keep your speed low to react quickly if someone steps into the road. Remember, if you see streetlights to stick to your national speed limit!
-
Adjust your costume!
If you’re in the spooky spirit of things and are wearing a mask or hat, make sure it doesn’t block your view. Drive without anything that could hinder your ability to see or steer. You don’t want to be a Highway Code rule breaker!
-
Turn on your headlights
Make sure your headlights are on from early evening to help you see and be seen by those little monsters!
-
Avoid all kinds of spooky spirits!
If you’re heading to a Halloween party, don’t drink and drive. A sober driver keeps everyone safer.
-
Don’t ‘Lurch’ off course!
We know that the decorations, lights, and costumes can be distracting. But keep your attention and focus on the road. Watch out for those mischievous trick or treaters and be ready to stop if needed.
We want everyone to have fun and stay safe this Halloween, so, stay alert, be cautious and let’s look out for each other.
