Get help with the cost of living
Money issues can affect everyone for many reasons. Whether it's struggling to pay bills, dealing with your day-to-day needs or facing unexpected costs - there is help out there. Here are a few ways you can get some extra support.
In this guide:
- Talk to your energy bill provider
- Check if you can get government support
- Ask the council for help with essential costs
- Money worries and your mental health
Talk to your energy bill provider
Energy bills can be very expensive, especially in winter when you need the heating on. If you’re finding it hard to pay your energy bill, contact your provider as soon as possible.
Some energy companies can help. They may offer payment plans, budgeting help, or grants to lower your bills.
Check if you can get government support
There are government schemes that can help with everyday costs:
Cold Weather Payment
If you get certain benefits, you may receive Cold Weather Payments. These are paid when the weather in your area drops to, or is going to be less than, 0 degrees for 7 days in a row. You can get £25 for each 7-day period. If you qualify, this is usually paid automatically.
Free school meals
Families on a low income may be able to get free school meals for their children. This includes people who get Universal Credit or Jobseeker’s Allowance. Your child’s school can help you apply by giving you an application form.
Help with rent
If you’re struggling to pay your rent, your local council may be able to help. This is called a Discretionary Housing Payment. You can apply through your council or on the goverment website.
Check if you can get Universal Credit
Universal Credit is a monthly payment that helps with living costs. You may be able to get it if you are on a low income. You can get it whether you’re working or not.
To claim, you must:
- Live in the UK
- Be 18 or over (some 16-17 year olds can apply)
- Be under State Pension age
- Have £16,000 or less in savings
You can apply for Universal Credit on the government website.
Ask the council for help with essential costs
Local councils can help with everyday essentials like food, clothing, and bills:
Council Tax Reduction
This lowers how much council tax you have to pay. It depends on your income and situation.
Council cost of living payment
Some councils offer emergency help with food, bills, or other essentials. Some also give food vouchers during school holidays. Check your local council’s website to see what help is available.
Money worries and your mental health
Money problems can make you feel stressed, worried, or low. It’s important to ask for help:
NHS support
The NHS can help with mental health support. You can speak to your GP or look for help on the NHS website.
Mental Health Charities
Charities like Mind and Samaritans offer free support and someone to talk to, when you need it.
Financial Counselling
Free services such as StepChange and Money Helper can help you to manage your money and plan a budget.
Money problems are tough, but help is out there. You don’t have to deal with it on your own.
