Keep your car safe in high winds
It's best not to drive in high winds. But if you can’t avoid it, we’ve got some tips to help you stay safe on the road when that wind gets up.
Driving in hazardous conditions
In this guide:
Tighten that grip
You're likely to be struck by strong gusts of wind, especially on any unsheltered roads or bridges. If you have to go out, grip the steering wheel firmly to keep control of your car.
Avoid travelling with trailers
When the winds pick up, try to avoid travelling with trailers, horse boxes, roof racks or caravans. They'll make it harder to steer straight and could make you jack-knife. This happens when the car and whatever is being towed go in the opposite direction, so definitely one to avoid!
Protective parking
If you can, park your car in a garage or a sheltered area to keep it safe from anything that could be uprooted by strong winds. Avoid parking under large trees or signs that could fall during strong winds, too.
Look out for stuff on the road
If you spot debris on the road, like tree branches or twigs, this could be a sign that there's an uprooted tree nearby - approach with caution!
